This week’s Word to the Wise for estate planning is:

Intestate: When a person dies without a will or trust, the person dies “intestate,” meaning the person’s estate is divided up based on state law.

Why does “intestate” matter in estate planning? Few of us like the idea of the government directing our personal affairs and what happens to our children and our assets after we die is no exception.

But the government will decide what happens to your children and assets if you die without a will or trust. In most states the government will even insert itself as your final beneficiary in the event your family members die before you do.

Not you.

Not your loved ones.

The government.

That’s why you should create a will or trust now, when time and opportunity are on your side.
